Note from the Board |
Message from President
Courageous Women/Entrepreneurial Women
Courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyway. Courage is saying what others don’t want to hear, knowing that you must speak your truth, knowing that you must name that which is obvious “the elephant in the room.” Courage comes in many forms, shapes and sizes and it is critical for those of us who want to live a full life, a life that includes growth, joy, pain, challenge and magic. Dare to speak out, speak up and make a difference for yourself and those around you, dare to be extraordinary!
As many of you know, March was women’s history month and March 8 was International Women’s Day. I love this month because I have the opportunity to attend events celebrating the lives of courageous women. I heard Gloria Steinem speak about the backlash against women and reproductive freedom. Many of us were aware of the issues but were reluctant to voice our concerns. Her message to younger women is to get mad, speak up, speak out, make a difference. I sat next to Patricia Schroeder at a Common Cause meeting, the first woman elected to congress from Colorado, as we bemoaned the continual challenge in electing women to political office and the difficulty in raising necessary campaign dollars-yet, she continues to be a champion for younger women encouraging and supporting them to run for political office. I attended a luncheon where local San Francisco women were honored for their bravery in raising awareness of glaring social concerns not being addressed. Nazly Mohajer who received “The Spirit of Equality Award” worked to start the human trafficking awareness campaign resulting in the creation of the San Francisco Coalition Against Human Trafficking (SFCAHT).
As women entrepreneurs, we are also women of courage and conviction. We recognize our passion, create businesses, and put ourselves on the line by saying “this is what I do, this is who I am and I am letting the world know what I have to offer.” We learn to be supportive of ourselves and connect and support others as we forge ahead on the often lonely path of entrepreneurship. We are smart, determined, idealistic, realistic and generous. We struggle to raise capital, speak publicly, ask for the sale, and create new products and services. We present ourselves to the world. If that’s not courage, I don’t know what is.
As President of NAWBO I celebrate you, women entrepreneurs of the San Francisco Bay area. Thank you for your presence, your mentoring, your support and your courage. Please join us for our next dinner meeting on April 12, 5:00 PM – 8:30 for a special, exciting interactive session where you will learn more about how your development as a business owner/leader and the success of your business are tied together.

Member Spotlight - Jennifer Everhart
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jennifer Everhart has been the Co-Owner and President of Concord-based Summit Drywall and Painting for 14 years. Her business specializes in tenant improvement projects for commercial and residential properties, and she manages a team of highly qualified, experienced craftsmen. Her husband, John, founded the company in 1994, but she took over operations four years later and has been running things ever since. "Now," she says, "it's all on me."
After reading about NAWBO in a book on women's business development, Jennifer joined the San Francisco Bay Area chapter because she believes in NAWBO's mission of strengthening women's capacity in business. She's looking forward to engaging with other women about the obstacles we still face--and how we can overcome them.
When I asked her where she sees her business in the next few years, she responds, "Doing very well. I plan on tripling the size [of Summit]-- but no larger than that. It's important to me to maintain personal relationships with my clients." Jennifer says the construction industry is bouncing back from the downturn, and she's anticipating doing more work with other women business owners in an industry where women's leadership has been scarce. "Women [in construction] are really looking to do business with each other," she says, and she sounds excited about the possibilities.
At the end of busy work days, Jennifer prioritizes spending time with her husband and five children. Getting to San Francisco in the evenings can be a challenge, but she's looking forward to the East Bay breakfasts as a way to get to know other women business owners in her area.
Welcome to NAWBO, Jennifer!
